Vojtěch Fröhlich

based in Prague

bio

“Over recent years the work of Vojtěch Fröhlich has deployed a relatively wide range of media and themes. It might appear as though his performances, installations, public interventions, film and photography was dissolving into a kind of arcane post-conceptual sphere, and some of his “flippant” ideas on the boundary of mundane everyday activities make the viewer question whether this is still art....Fröhlich usually makes do with minimum of resources that as a consequence have a strong effect.”

In 2022, he created the performance series Pause in the closed Czechoslovak Pavilion during the Venice Biennale.

Since 2012, Klub AVU has become a substantial part of his practice. Originally conceived as a semester project, it gradually developed into a long-running cultural and gastronomic space. In a similar way, he is now developing Hostinec U Tošováka in Adršpach, a traditional climbers’ pub and space in one of Europe’s most significant sandstone climbing areas. Both places form a less visible but continuously evolving part of his artistic practice, connecting the two worlds he has moved between throughout his life: contemporary art and climbing.

As both spaces gradually become more independent, Fröhlich is gaining more freedom to return to individual projects and performances.
